I never thought it would come to this, but I am reduced to complimenting George W. Bush! After making snide remarks about him, his election-stealing, his apparent lack of intelligence, his over-reliance on clichés, his penchant for acting like a bully, and various other unsavory aspects of his personality, I was struck by two comments, one by Bush directly, the other in an administration comment.

Para estos días, los medios de comunicación quedan llenos de reportes conmemorativos de los acontecimientos trágicos del 11 de septiembre pasado. Y, deberían ser conmemorados. También deberíamos tomar nota del hecho de que septiembre 11 es también otro aniversario, el del golpe sangriento del general retirado Augusto Pinochet en Chile, patrocinado por la CIA, que derrocó al presidente de Chile, Salvador Allende.

CHICAGO – On Aug. 14, a vanload of Latino immigrants from Chicago were traveling on the Pennsylvania turnpike, near Pittsburgh. The nine travelers, mostly Mexican nationals, were on their way to a conference of day laborers when the van blew a tire. To their relief, a Pennsylvania state trooper pulled his car over to offer help, they assumed.

TEL AVIV – On Sept.29, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, who had been under seige for ten days in his almost completely destroyed headquarters in Ramallah, was greeted by a rally as he left the building after the Israeli occupation forces had withdrawn from the vicinity of the building. A crowd lifted Arafat on their shoulders and welcomed him as a victorious hero.
