Despite a growing number of Floridians, including Cuban Americans, who want normal diplomatic relations with Havana, the Sunshine State has long been a base of foul schemes against the Cuban Revolution.

His body riddled with shrapnel, Wissam Abdullah, 14, spoke from his hospital bed in the southern Lebanese port city of Sidon. Wissam is one of the few survivors of an Israeli bombing attack that killed most of his extended family as they fled the Lebanese border village of Marwaheen July 15.

As I write, Israeli troops are invading Lebanon on its southern border. No doubt this escalation will heighten the danger of a wider war, one that could involve other state and non-state actors in that region and draw millions of people into the fighting.

To call the island nation of Puerto Rico a “commonwealth” is to condone U.S. imperialism’s use of Puerto Rico to further its dastardly goals in Latin America and its use of the youth of Borinquen as cannon fodder for its wars of conquest and domination.

You can see Lebanon from my sister’s backyard. She and her family and thousands of others in northern Israel live with a constant roar of gunfire — mostly from Israeli cannons aiming to kill Lebanese, occasionally from a Hezbollah shell that might land on them.

On July 26, 1953, small bands of militants attacked two Cuban Army installations in eastern Cuba. Most of the young revolutionaries were tortured and killed. The survivors went on to oust the U.S.-backed Batista dictatorship.

Government policies, such as tax policy and transfers, have the potential to greatly reduce high child poverty rates that would otherwise prevail if left solely to the market incomes families receive from work and other sources. The anti-poverty effectiveness of such policies varies considerably across countries.
