The Bush administration encountered several new headaches this week in its effort to justify and maintain its occupation of Iraq.

It has been nearly two-and-a-half years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, killed 2,976 people on American soil. Yet there are still many unanswered questions regarding the events leading up to those attacks.

It is always heartwarming and helpful to return to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Even though Dr. King’s last words were spoken over 35 years ago, much of what he had to say still has application to our struggle against right-wing reaction and its representatives in government.

ATAMI, Japan – Approximately 1,000 delegates representing 400,000 members of the Japanese Communist Party (JCP), meeting here at the party’s 23rd congress, voted Jan. 17 to adopt the party’s revised program and a resolution outlining its basic domestic policies and its approach to world politics.

BERLIN – Eleven left-wing and communist parties, meeting in Berlin on Jan. 11, agreed to found a party called the European Left. The parties adopted a common program, but plan further discussions on the new party’s rules and leadership structure.

Nora Castañeda, president of the Women’s Development Bank in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, will be touring the United States from Jan. 29 to Feb. 9 to speak on the topic of “Creating a caring economy in Venezuela.”

With the death toll of U.S. soldiers in Iraq reaching the 500 mark this week, peace and justice groups are intensifying their efforts to build a Global Day of Action against War and Occupation on Saturday, March 20, the one-year anniversary of the U.S. bombing and invasion of Iraq.

George W. Bush made a major space policy announcement at NASA headquarters on Jan. 14, including establishment of permanent bases on the moon and an aggressive program to take humans to Mars. Estimates for these projects could well exceed $150 billion.
