LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, representing 360 unions and more than 800,000 members, unanimously passed a resolution against the Bush administration’s drive for war against Iraq, Jan. 27.

WASHINGTON – Voices in the Wilderness (VITW), which has delivered medicine, toys and other humanitarian relief to the Iraqi people in defiance of U.S. sanctions imposed in 1991, announced Jan. 21 that they will not pay $50,000 in fines imposed by the Treasury Department and will stand beside Iraqis against a U.S. war.

Iraqi communists have faced grave difficulties opposing a U.S. war against Iraq, while at the same time fighting for democratic alternatives to a repressive government headed by Pres. Saddam Hussein.

WASHINGTON – George W. Bush’s rush toward war on Iraq ran into a human wall Jan. 18 as anti-war protesters packed the streets of Washington, San Francisco, Tucson, Portland, Oregon, Toronto, Canada and 20 other cities chanting “Peace now!” and “No blood for oil!”

CHICAGO – On Jan. 16, this city of three million people declared itself for peace when the City Council voted 46-1 opposing a pre-emptive U.S. military attack on Iraq.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – On Jan. 16, about 40 people gathered in front of City Hall here to participate in a press conference called by Hudson County Coalition for Peace and Justice to present a resolution against the war on Iraq.

Millions protested in hundreds of cities, in at least 37 countries around the globe Jan. 18-19 weekend, denouncing the Bush administration’s threat to attack Iraq. Some highlights:

The anti-war movement in the U.S., revitalized by the threats and bluster of George W. Bush, is already developing at a much faster pace than did the anti-Vietnam War movement.

LOS ANGELES – Twenty thousand people of every race and nationality filled the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 11 in what many are calling the largest city protest against the war in Iraq in our nation so far.

Warning that war with Iraq will cost thousands of Iraqi and U.S. lives and waste billions of tax dollars needed for education and health care, the city council of Gary, Ind., unanimously approved a resolution Jan.7 opposing war on the oil-rich nation.
