With U.S. troops seizing control of Baghdad, a triumphant and self-congratulatory mood is enveloping the Bush administration. Bush is aglow as the self-appointed liberator and champion of a democratic Iraq and Middle East while Rumsfeld is acting like the first great freedom warrior of the 21st century.

Am I hallucinating, or is it really happening? Is it possible that Bush Inc. is now so pumped up on its own hubris that Bush, Cheney & Co. no longer care about how things look, that they can engage in blatant conflicts of interest, public opinion be damned?

The People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo has reported recently on the grim circumstances confronted by five Cuban men convicted of spying and imprisoned in the United States. (See PWW Feb. 22 and March 15.) Their trial and sentencing marked them as political prisoners, a status now confirmed by cruel treatment at the hands of U.S. prison authorities – weeks of solitary confinement.

For weeks before the U.S.-led attack on Iraq, anti-war demonstrators from all over the Bay Area promised that if the United States attacked Iraq there would be “No business as usual in San Francisco.” March 20, the day after Iraq was attacked, thousands poured into the streets to make good on their promise.
