LOS ANGELES – In 1965, the 265,000 people in the Watts area of South Los Angeles were served by eight small, private hospitals with 440 beds. Today the 1 million people in the area have only two hospitals with less than 300 beds.

U.S. young people are off to Cuba in mid February to study medicine at that nation’s Latin American School of Medicine (LASM). They join 8,000 other students already there. The students, from 26 countries, including eight African nations, have promised to attend to the poor and underserved when they return home.

In early January the leaders of the New Unity Partnership (NUP) decided to disband. NUP was a loose caucus of national unions in the AFL-CIO, including SEIU, HERE, UNITE (now HERE-UNITE), the Laborers and the Carpenters. They got together during the summer of 2003 with the avowed purpose of pushing for reforms in the AFL-CIO.

As an oncologist, I see the deadly and tragic consequences of exposure to the carcinogen asbestos in my patients who suffer from lung cancer and mesothelioma.
