I love Los Angeles. Not the la-la land of the media. I like downtown LA, east of Hill St., the Maginot Line the LAPD puts up to keep the homeless away from the high rises. I grew up in the fifties just east of downtown and could see City Hall from my grammar school window by day, then on TV’s Dragnet show at night.

SAN FRANCISCO — Fortieth anniversary events this year have highlighted the historic struggle of African American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tenn. — in 1968 among the country’s most oppressed workers — for union rights, decent wages and conditions, respect and dignity, and the fusing of labor, civil rights and peace struggles in that crucible. They have also pointed to the struggles that continue today

In her response to John McCain’s use of her name and image to attack Barack Obama in a recent TV ad, Paris Hilton proposed an interesting energy policy: combine new offshore oil drilling with serious investment in clean energy alternatives like plug-in hybrids and wind and solar power. Apparently when Paris talks, people listen. A remarkably similar bipartisan bill is making its way through the Senate right now.

Fifteen thousand members of the press are covering the historic events at the Democratic Party convention in Denver. Next week the same number will cover the Republican convention in the Twin Cities. After Denver, many of them may wonder how to cover the smaller, less exciting event.

Cullen Jones, only the second African American to make the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, is the first African American to win an Olympic Gold Medal for his performance in the team’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay. Amid all the well-earned acclaim for Michael Phelps’ historic accomplishments, like racking up eight gold medals in one Olympics for swimming, Jones’ historic first should be noted.

There were celebrations throughout Pakistan after President Pervez Musharraf resigned Aug. 18. Jubilant crowds gave out sweets and congratulated each other for the democratic victory, one daily newspaper, The Frontier Post, reported.

Nov. 4 could ultimately change the face of American politics and it is Latino voters who could make the difference. In a recent poll by the nationwide Pew Hispanic Center, Latinos are overwhelmingly supporting Sen. Barack Obama for president at 66 percent over Sen. John McCain at 23 percent.
