Be a ‘Worldbuilder’

After a great success in its 2006 Fund Drive — raising $40,000 more than a year ago — the People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo is reinvigorating its “Worldbuilder” program.

Worldbuilder gives readers of both the print and online editions an opportunity to make regular monthly contributions to the paper, much like the sustainer programs of many other organizations.

A Worldbuilder who commits to donating just $10 per month will receive an unlimited subscription to the PWW and periodic gifts, such as pamphlets and stickers, for as long as he or she remains involved in the program.

The PWW had a successful Worldbuilder campaign in the 1980s and ’90s. It was so successful, in fact, that there are still a number of people today who continue to contribute to the program, though it has been unadvertised for years.

In those days, it was much harder to be a Worldbuilder. It required keeping a stack of forms, sent by the PWW office, writing a check each month, and mailing it.

“Of course, we’re going to continue to give people that option,” said PWW Business Manager Dan Margolis. “But we’ve moved forward a lot since then. Now we can automatically deduct $5, $10, $20 or however many dollars from someone’s credit card. It’s a much easier way to give.”

These donations will help in concrete ways.

“We are always looking to do more to make our paper better,” Margolis said. “For example, sending reporters to where the important stories are, like the recent media reform conference in Memphis or this weekend’s antiwar march and lobbying in Washington, D.C.

“Our staff reporters travel in the most economical way, but it still adds up. Worldbuilders would help cover these costs.”

Building the paper’s readership is just as important as building the paper’s content, Margolis said. “We plan to spend a lot of time in the next year to get the paper to more people, get more subscriptions. Increasing the circulation of our paper directly correlates with building a progressive agenda for this country and defeating the Bush agenda.”
