A peace activist holds a drawing by an A-bomb survivor representing people badly burned – like they were on fire — and running after atom bombs were dropped by the United States on Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945, and on Nagasaki, three days later. Some 250,000 people were instantly killed, with thousands dying later from radiation. Japanese and U.S. peace movements have long advocated a world free of nuclear weapons. Now significant sections of the U.S. establishment are also suggesting that nuclear weapons should be eliminated. The United States holds the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.
