Celebrating women in peace, freedom struggles

PHILADELPHIA — In honor of Women’s History Month, the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware District of the Communist Party USA hosted “Celebrating the Contribution of Women in the Struggle for Peace, Freedom, Justice and Equality” forum here.

District Chairperson Debbie Bell keynoted with a presentation on her recent trip to Porto Alegre, Brazil, where she participated in the World Social Forum. Representing the Communist Party USA, Bell spoke at a WSF workshop on socialism, addressing over 2,000 in attendance.

More than 150,000 people from all around the world attended the WSF this year. An important space for dialogue between “civil societies” and its members, the WSF is dedicated to alternatives to corporate globalization and says that “another world is possible.”

On display at the Women’s History Month forum, at the W.E.B. Du Bois Center here, were photo exhibits honoring famous women in history and a detailed display from the World Social Forum.

Bell shared the podium with a special guest, Al Zappala, who lost his son in the Iraq war. Zappala is working with Military Families Against the War to end the war through peaceful protests outside U.S. military bases on the East Coast and elsewhere.
