African American clergy held a press conference Aug. 24 at the Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago to express their solidarity with Elvira Arellano, left, who has taken sanctuary there. Arellano is defying a deportation order so she can stay with her son, a U.S. citizen. Pastor Debra E. Williams, right, of Clergy Speaks Interdenominational, said, “The whole immigration issue speaks about how the system treats people of color. Right does not have a color; justice and righteousness need to be served.” Arellano said, “It is real important that people know that the African American community is in support of immigrant rights, for a just legislation to keep families together.”
