'National security' hides anti-unionism

The Coalition of Labor Union Women passed the following resolution at its national convention Oct. 7:

The current administration has a mixed position regarding labor unions. This position is currently evidenced in the federal sector by the president's actions to declare several federal agencies as "secure," his designation makes federal agencies ineligible to have a union-no organizing, no representation, no negotiating, no voice.

This designation applies to all employees, regardless of job title or position in the agency. Two such agencies that are targeted for this designation are the U.S. Customs and the U.S. Border Patrol.

While unions support a safe and secure workplace and country, union membership does not jeopardize either national safety or security. This designation is currently being added to a rider to legislation dealing with the tragic incidents of Sept. 11. And, failing that, it may be added to federal appropriations legislation that is making currently making its way through Congress.

Therefore, be it resolved that CLUW fight this indirect method of union busting and urge their members to contact legislators immediately to stop this assault on federal unions.
